Last day, first day

June 13th, 2008 Randy 1 comment

I’m done!! Finis! Finito! Finisario! Finisushi! Those are all the words for “finished” in various and sundry languages: some unknown to most humans. Today was my last day at work. Well, ok, so it wasn’t a full day. They got me to stick around until about 11. So, I was there for 3 hours, anyway. I’m pretty excited to be done. That two weeks’ notice thing is a BEAR! The whole time, you just want to be done. I wish you could just say, “Ok! I’m done! TTYL! TTFN! a-dub-a-dub-a-dub-a That’s all, Folks!” tell them to call with any questions, and walk out the door. To be perfectly honest, I liked the people I worked with, I liked the work when there was work to be done, but I just wasn’t seeing the compensation. So, it’s time to move on.
And speaking of moving on, we’re moving into the house on Monday! Right now, there’s piles of boxes in the kitchen, piles of boxes in the living room, and piles of stuff waiting to be boxed up all over the place. I should be working on packing up the guest bedroom right now, but the lure of the internet caught me and I have yet to be able to pull myself away.
This morning, on my way to work, there was a big ol’ front of storms coming through the ST. Louis area. As I pulled onto the highway, the sun was shining behind me and there was a huge bank of very dark, gray storm clouds in front of me. The contrast was amazing. And as I drove under the massive thunderheads, the very front edge of them was bent, almost kneeling, towards the ground. You could see the fronts colliding. Usually, you have to have some meteorologist explain to you with hokey diagrams what happens when a warm and a cold front collide, but I was watching it in action. The cold front was moving under the warm air in front of it. Astoundingly picturesque and beautiful. Then, as I was pulling away, I was thinking of all the analogies between that weather pattern and the spiritual struggle that takes place in our lives every day and how Christ, the light of the world, will cause every knee to bow in subjection to Him.
Besides that, not too much has happened today. I’ve really got to get some lunch. I’m starving. I’ll keep you posted.

Woohoo!

Well, a lot has happened since i last posted on here. I also can’t remember where I left off, so I’ll just tell you everything. We’ve had a couple good weekends of working at the house. Jason helped us one weekend, then my dad came last weekend. They did the majority of the painting, for which I am eternally grateful. I tried helping Jason paint the living room, but my painting skills just aren’t what they used to be. Dad pretty much painted the kitchen single-handedly. And we got our new fridge, which is EXACTLY the same as mom and dad’s fridge. We just paid $1k less for it! Sears Outlet. check it out. Meanwhile, I was cleaning the pool and working on my tan, mowing the lawn, cleaning the pool filter, etc. Faith painted the backsplash, changed light sockets, painted the bedroom, and provided support. Literally. She held the light fixture while I hooked up with the wiring. Oh, and while I was messing with said wires?….yeah, that breaker thing in the gray box in the basement?…not turned off. Nope. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. ESPECIALLY SINCE IT WAS MY FRAIL, MORTAL BODY THAT COULD HAVE PROVIDED AN AVENUE OF ESCAPE FOR THOSE 15 AMPS OF RAW, UNMITIGATED ELECTRICITY WAITING QUIETLY TO BE RELEASED FROM THEIR DUNGEON IN THAT UNASSUMING LITTLE GRAY BOX IN THE BASEMENT! Whew! *gasp* that’s a lot to say really loud and in one breath. *wheeze* ok. I’m ok. By the way, if you’re thinking of buying a new ceiling fan or light fixture or something, definitely go with the name brand stuff. The ceiling fan I put up had very clear instructions and everything fit together perfectly and it was up and running in no time. It was from Home Depot…Harbor Breeze I think the brand was. Maybe not a huge name, but way better than the Portfolio brand light fixture we put up. I won’t go into what was wrong with it because some of you, my lovely readers, will be seeing this light fixture very soon. What I will say is, the instructions weren’t worth their weight in paper pulp and the pieces did not fit together very well at all. Overall, ceiling fan installation: wicked easy; light fixture installation: nightmare. So, that’s how the house is doing so far. We’re looking forward to moving all our junk over next Monday. After that, we’re pretty much done with the apartment! Every time the little boys next door coming pounding down the stairs and slam the front door behind them, we look at each other and say, “Only one more week!”

Looooong weekend

June 3rd, 2008 Randy 1 comment

This past weekend was our first weekend with access to our new house. We got the keys last Wednesday. So, basically, we busted our butts all weekend painting, opening the pool, and spending lots of money on stuff that you have to buy when you get your first home. Fortunately, we had Jason helping get started with the painting on Saturday. We pretty much got the whole living room painted with his help. AND he made us take the tarp off the pool, which has turned into a bigger project than I first expected. We’ve been back and forth to the pool store nearly 42 times in the last couple of days, and I’m having to go to the house after work to vacuum the algae off the bottom of the pool. Faith started painting the bedroom on Monday, and we replaced a couple of the light sockets in the living room from nasty, nicotine-stained ivory to nice, clean, new white. It’s amazing how much of a difference a coat of paint with some color and clean light sockets can make. Keep checking in for updates and pictures on our progress.
